This is the basic introductory course for both the complete beginner and those who have some experience of either dinghy sailing or cruising. The course will include safety at sea, boat handling and general cruising skills. Completing the course will give you the ability to be a useful crewmember on any yacht.

RYA Day Skipper

Five-day course or three weekends. Dates Prices

Course requirements:

• Basic navigational knowledge
• Basic sailing
• 5 days, 100 miles and 4 night hours.

It is desirable to have completed the competent crew course prior to attending day skipper course. In which instruction will be given in pilotage, seamanship, boat handling and an introduction to navigation and meteorology. The instructor will encourage you to take decisions and then accept the responsibility for the outcome of these decisions whether negative or positive. The successful Day Skipper will be able to undertake short passages by day in both tidal and non-tidal waters. You will also hold the minimum qualification to charter one of our Jeanneau range.

RYA COASTAL SKIPPER

Five-day course or three weekends. Dates Prices

• Course requirements:
• Knowledge up to Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster shore based standard
• Practical ability to Day Skipper
• A minimum of 15 days on board, 2 days as a Skipper
• 300 miles and 8 night hours logged

Candidates should also hold either a Marine Radio Operator's Short Range Certificate or VHF Radio Operator's Certificate and a First Aid Certificate

This advanced course specializes in the skills and techniques required to skipper a yacht on passages involving more complex decision making, watch keeping, cruise planning, navigation and pilotage. In addition you will be given the opportunity to improve your close quarters boat handling skills under power and sail. Practising heavy weather cruising and navigation in restricted visibility. All aspects will be thoroughly practised before the RYA independent examiner boards for a two-day exam.

By the end of this course the successful Coastal Skipper will have sufficient knowledge to skipper a yacht safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night, in both tidal and non- tidal waters.

YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE

Seven or five days. Dates Prices

Five or three days refresher followed by weekend examination.

Course requirements:

• 50 days on board, 5 days skipper
• 2500 miles logged
• 5 passages over 60 miles including 2 overnight and 2 as skipper

Examination candidates should also hold either a Marine Radio Operator's Certificate or VHF Radio Operator's Certificate and a First Aid Certificate

There will be five days on board with one of our specialized instructors covering all points of the rigorous examination, which will be undertaken by an RYA examiner at the end of the week. This course gives potential yachtmasters the opportunity to thoroughly revise both practical and theoretical subjects. These will cover:

• Passage Planning
• Close Quarters Boat Handling
• Skippering Techniques
• Man Overboard Recovery
• Meteorology
• Navigation
• Pilotage in Restricted Visibility

We strongly advise all our candidates to have a thorough knowledge of the Collision Regulations, particularly in relation to lights, shapes and sound signals.

The RYA/DoT Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence is one of the most highly respected yachting qualifications in the world. This will allow you to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage up to 150 miles from any port.
